Is Trump already getting tired of Elon?
It was inevitable that two gigantic egos would collide. Trump cannot tolerate sharing the spotlight with anyone else for too long, and Elon cannot STFU.
I’m on my way to bed as it just hit 2:00 AM, but I wanted to post this quick update for you. Mediaite is reporting that Trump is tiring of Elon already. It’s Mediaite, so take it with a grain of salt, but I don’t doubt it either. Trump cannot stand to share the spotlight with anybody for too long, and Elon does not know the meaning of the word “discrete.”
Here are some of the details from Mediaite:
President-elect Donald Trump has shown growing signs of frustration with Elon Musk, his wealthiest and most vocal adviser, sources tell Mediaite.
Musk, the world’s richest man, has been deeply involved in the White House transition after backing Trump in the 2024 election with $150 million and relentless support on X, the social media platform he owns.
Sources close to the transition, who spoke on condition of anonymity to reveal internal conversations, said Trump is growing weary of Musk’s omnipresence – as well as the media attention his antics are garnering.
“100 percent Trump is annoyed,” said one Trump insider who worked on the 2024 campaign. “There’s a Chinese saying: ‘two tigers cannot live on one mountaintop.’”
“There was likely an allure to it in the beginning but it seemed like it could go ugly,” another Trump insider said of the alliance between the president-elect and Musk. “Trump is Trump. I think it’s just the way Trump is. Someone that is around that much and having influence would be a bother.”
“I mean the guy came in, gave a boatload of money, and wants to take over the place,” the insider said, adding they don’t think Musk has “bad intentions,” but “you also can’t just inject a shadow president somewhere.”
The Trump insider who worked on the 2024 campaign downplayed Musk’s influence.
“The media is portraying him as a co-president,” they said. “Musk is a character actor. There is only one executive producer, one lead in this TV show, and that is Trump. Elon will have his role, his focuses, but he is meant to disrupt the status quo in Washington and Trump is weaponizing him.”
“The only one to move the MAGA movement is Trump,” they added. “Elon will be able to amplify the message.”
The source warned that Musk’s enormous wealth and influence will not protect him from being dumped by Trump if the president-elect’s frustrations persist.
“Unless you’re family, you’re not family,” they said.
Is anybody surprised that Trump is getting tired of Elon? Right now, Trump has his hands full in finishing the transition and getting ready to assume power in January. There are a zillion things he has to deal with, including some leftover legal woes in New York that are still haunting him. He did not need Elon’s autistic antics to cause a MAGA meltdown that destroyed the shared sense of victory that was achieved by winning the election in November.
The H-1B thing was completely avoidable and served no purpose whatsoever for Trump. It was a stupid distraction from the transition and inflamed Trump’s base in a way that we haven’t seen before. Nothing was gained, and the MAGA coalition was strained in an ugly public drama that was no doubt relished by Trump’s political opponents. It is likely that Trump or someone close to him called Elon and told him to STFU and move on to stop the political damage that was happening.
If he hasn’t figured it out already, Elon will have to learn what Trump’s boundaries are and then stay within them. Otherwise, I can see Trump giving Elon the boot after a certain point. Yes, Elon has been very helpful with his money and his ownership of X. Yet Elon suffers from the same arrogance as the rest of the tech bros. They think they can throw a bunch of money at something, and it buys them whatever power and influence they want to have.
Unfortunately, for them, the money only goes so far in the world of politics. Trump has to deliver at least some of what his base wants him to do, or he runs the risk of having a big chunk of that base stay home in 2026. That would help the Democrats take the House and/or the Senate, and that would be terrible for Trump. He’d be looking at another impeachment, as well as hearings and every other thing imaginable that the Democrats could do to him.
This is what Elon and the rest of the tech bros do not understand. They will get some of what they want from Trump, but not all of it. He has other constituencies to answer to, and he desperately needs his voters to protect him from the wrath of the Democrats in 2026. Without his MAGA voters, Trump knows that he and the entire Republican Party will be totally screwed in the next election.
The other problem here is that Elon thinks that it’s all about Elon. He is the world’s richest man, and no doubt his company toadies constantly tell him his shit doesn’t stink. But that attitude is NOT going to work with Donald Trump. Trump’s ego is as big as the universe itself, and he has been fighting vicious political battles since he first ran in 2016. He is not going to let Elon walk into MAGA and take it over. There can only be one Dark Lord of MAGA, and that is Donald Trump, not Elon Musk.
We shall see how the mixture of Trump’s titanic ego and Elon’s autism plays out, but Elon would do well to take great care in how he behaves online and offline. Trump will tolerate him up to a point, but then he’ll dump his ass by the side of the road whenever it suits him. Elon’s best bet is to have a lower profile publicly and try to influence Trump from behind the scenes in a way that doesn’t irritate Trump.
Elon likely doesn’t know it yet, but he’s playing with fire by pissing Trump off. Well, sometimes the burned hand teaches best, and Elon is likely to get a hard lesson if he doesn’t learn to STFU and let Trump be the president.

If Musk were a team player, Trump could put him somewhere and say, "Clean house."
Musk could get it done, but just like Trump, he loves the sound of his own voice.
