I'm afraid that I remain in a 70's time warp so haven't heard it 🥺 By the way - for retro Heavy Metal fans - they should listen to Budgie - the original version of "Breadfan" (covered by Metallica) is a killer. The whole "Never Turn Your Back on a Friend" album is fantastic - as is their "In For the Kill" album. Overall, I think the young Ozzy was the real deal - getting rich and marrying a Harpie ruined him !

Yes Budgie, hugely underrated, almost prog metal like late Hawkwind. I will confess to liking metal on the prog border like Rush as well, some people may consider it cringe, but it is, what it is. :-)

This is a great album: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=o-qxszQ_7Ho

And the great Lemmy and Hawkwind: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DJgMyk5vJ20

Mr Raven. (love your woodcuts)I have that Budgie album on CD - along with Never Turn Your Back on a Friend and In For the Kill. I had the original release of Never Turn Your Back on a Friend on vinyl when it was released - Breadfan had a short introduction speech of Churchill saying something like(it was a long time ago) "I have nothing to give but Blood, Tears, Toil and Sweat" and a bell ringing before blasting into the track. All stolen unfortunately - copies of that record very rare as there was some kind of copyright infringement.

In my opinion AC/DC copied the bell idea, copied Budgie version of Baby Please don't Go, and their "Show Business" song is reminiscent of Budgie's "Running from my Soul"

Thanks for the links 👍🏻

Oh yeah. Ozzy is no slouch, but for me it's Dio, his singing chops are among the greatest ever.

I saw Ozzy in concert 1991, he was very good.

I saw Sabbath on the 2007 Heaven and Hell tour w Dio, Alice Cooper opening act. Easily one of my favorite concerts ever. I feel very lucky to have seen that performance.

Tony Iommi blew me away at that concert, he is soooo underrated.

**Dio's solo work is good too, especially Holy Diver

Ozzy had a great sense of melody. I heard Tony Iommi say how Ozzy just came out singing the melody of Planet Caravan on the spot as Tony and Geezer were jamming away on the main riff.

I don't doubt it. But do you believe he wrote all the songs on Bark at the Moon? 🤔

Not at all. Not denying his original talent but he's always benefited from being surrounded by great bands. His talent in a mediocre band might have resulted in a two hit wonder.

Ozzy, clearly.

However, post Sabbath Dio was awesome. The best live song performance I’ve ever seen was Dio doing Heaven and Hell!

Transcendent!

I prefer Ozzie singing in Black Sabbath. even if he's turned into a senile offensively Establishment-supporting old fart now, I like the music from back then.

I like Dio too, but in his own band rather than in Sabbath.

Dio was great but the answer has to be Ozzy. You could have thrown Rob Halford into your mix. He replaced Dio for the final show of the tour when Dio wouldn’t go on.

Any chance Tony & Geezer have Ian Gillan rerecord Ozzy's vocals and rerelease the results?

BTW, the Born Again album is really underrated. It is not a bad album at all, it just had a dumb cover.

I don't know if Gillan still sings, but I'm glad somebody voted for him. I was going to, but I felt I had to go with Dio.

I saw footage of the classic Deep Purple lineup (Mk 3?) sans Blackmore and Lord performing at a festival in Brazil from a couple years ago and the whole band was killer but Gillan was singing his ass off. He sounded great, it was surprising. It was good to see someone getting it done, putting on an honest performance with no trickery noticed and especially considering what he's been through.

Heaven and Hell - one of my favorite songs of all times!

I love it too, it's really a Dio song as you can see what the band Dio would become later.

Well......tough one! Probably my favourite rock/metal singer ever is Ronnie. And he is definitely the best vocalist that Blackmore's Rainbow ever had on board in my opinion. But those first five or six Sabs LPs are the essential Black Sabbath catalogue for me, so it's got to be Ozzy. As far as lyrics, I believe Ronnie wrote his lyrics but I think it's less clear (from what I remember reading) whether Geezer was quite a big contributor with that. Nonetheless, it's Ozzy for me :)

<weg> Black Sabbath had singers? They always sounded like tortured cats to me.

Believe me, I do enjoy your work, but the YouTube thing makes me feel itchy scratchy or have I said too much?

I kinda like what Iggy Pop said when asked about always going back to the original band, he said we are communist , not necessarily politically , but financially Yes. I say this because how do creative artists decide what is fair, I mean it’s not like punching a time clock or maybe a better analogy would be Chopping wood.

Oh, also-

The best Sabbath album ever, is Ozzy’s Speak of the Devil!
