Not a huge fan of Tina Turner, but Madonna is awful. The only things good that came out of her career were the Weird Al parodies.

Definitely Tina Turner for me. She seemed to entertain, and her music is still used today in whole or in snippets. You are not going to hear any of Madonna's music which was all created to serve agendas in my opinion. From Sexualized to gun confiscation and if the Illuminati is a conspiracy theory, she sure makes it seem real. Tina decided to retire with her dignity and Madonna continues and even Piers Morgan attacked her not too long ago and others pointed out what appeared like she could be wearing a diaper. The other writer you provided link to is correct that Madonna thinks she is still in her 20's. She's definitely a full-blown liberal. During the last Grammys she seemed to also indicate Satan worship for her and others in attendance is real.

Tina was always real. Madonna was just the plastic covering.

Tina Turner all the way. To me, she is a true singer while Madonna was and always will be an entertainer.

I'm going to go ahead and be a pain in the ass, go with unlisted third option: Joan Jett. Early on, she was the queen of the punk genre.

Jett is great. If I was going to be a PITA, I'd vote for Linda Ronstadt. So great across so many genres.

Nothing destroys a person as thoroughly as harboring a sense of resentful victimhood. For one's own sake avoid this at all costs.

Given the choice of either concert or waiting at the DMV, I think I'll go with waiting at the DMV.

Tina Turner knew when to step away. Madonna a near 66 year old woman wants you to think it’s 1985, she’s all the new rage, she can be a diva, and she’s loved by same young, beautiful and daring.

Tina was definitely a rock chick at heart and didn't claim otherwise. She knew how to pick a good song and writer though, as shown with the Mark Knopfler collaborations(did she do some Bee Gees stuff too?), as well as the tunes by "lesser known" artists like the great Paul Brady. I agree about Madonna. Very shrewd businesswoman and knew what an opportunity the explosion in the MTV pop video era represented for edgy stuff like some of her visuals. Who can forget the impact of the Like a Prayer video? But essentially pretty insubstantial if enjoyable pop at times. "Holiday" has such an irresistible bass hook still in my opinion though!

Great essay, undead host. And I agree with your assessment. Having been a Madonna superfan (and now putting her in the past), I recognize the difference between the organic of Tina Turner and the manufactured package that is Madonna.

You want a breath-taking Tina performance? Try this one from the early 60s with Ike. You can't manufacture what she's got:

Thank you very much for the kind words about my piece, and for linking to it.

Tina, of course. No contest. But Madonna did good work in Evita. That work made her a one hit wonder for me. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KD_1Z8iUDho
