I enjoyed it and discovered that Tolkien's writing is uneven: large areas are at perhaps the 5th grade level but many others have fascinating and advanced vocabulary. The kids still think about LOTR and (I think unfortunately) heavily identify with the movies.
Thanks so much, Angela, I am glad you enjoyed it. I enjoyed writing it too as it took me back many years to a very different time in my life, long before the Internet and all the other stuff we have now. Those were different days.
This was a lovely read, what a wonderful teacher and such beautiful memories. My mother also read The Hobbit and all the LOTR books aloud to us kids during lunch. My kids are a little young for Tolkien, but I read to them, too (also during lunch). I still listen to audiobooks when I clean the house.
Thanks so much, I appreciate the comment. Glad to hear you are reading to your kids! Fantastic way to get them interested in reading, and lovely memories for them later in life too!
Big Tolkien fan (the sole raison d'etre my channels have alongside Conan the Cimmerican) this was a great article to read. Hobbit is something special discovered it as a kid and got sucked in too. Ms Heinz sounds like she was a great lady.
That's a wonderful book, gives you much more perspective on Middle Earth than just LOTR or The Hobbit. Check out Rob Inglis version of The Hobbit if you want to revisit that story.
I read the entire LOTR out loud to my kids when they were little.
what a wonderful thing for dad to do for his kids, great memories for them.

Just happened to check my email and was delighted to read your heartfelt essay about your teacher. God your good and gifted!

Than you
You just transported me back to Grade 5 in Primary School
My teacher (I can’t remember his name 🤔) would read the poems of Banjo Patterson hence I still love poetry
He drove a crimson MGB
He left to fight in Vietnam with the Australian Army

Indeed, the first time a child or teenager reads it, it is an amazing experience for them.
Wonderful. Bless Mrs. Heinz.
