The endless flood of illegal aliens into the US has some hoping that birthright citizenship be ended as a way of discouraging illegals and their anchor babies.
I’m on the same page as you. Enforce the La we already have, stop tying law enforcement agents hands behind their backs, and leave the Constitution alone.
I have no illusions about Trump. I realize he is the author of “The Art of the Deal,” so I take ANYTHING he says with a MOUTHFUL of salt. The test for me will be him following through on the border and pardoning the folks who have been held without due process for JAN. 6th. If he fails on these, then he has shown his true colors.
I haven't researched the matter deeply, but I have heard that when the 14th Amendment was created, the discussions in Congress included assurances that it would not be used for the current purpose of anchor babies.
Basically, the 14th Amendment has been used for just about everything other than it's original intent: to give former slaves full citizenship. Instead, it has been used to turn corporations into citizens, legalize gay marriage, extend other amendments to the states, and probably a few other things. (The First Amendment did not outlaw state established churches, only a federal established church. It took the 14th Amendment to give the ACLU the tools to give Satan worship the same status as long established religions.)
Birthright citizenship is the bastardization of the 14th Amendment. The intention was to give slaves citizenship. There was no intent to give anyone born here the right to be an American citizen. We don't need any new laws. We just need to heed its original intention and strip it of those who got it that way. Let everyone become citizens and go through the intended process. Read what was required in the Immigration Act of 1965.
I can see so much abuse in this. If we ended birthright citizenship, political parties could hold it over people's heads during elections. "Vote R/D and a citizen you will be." Democrats could use this to revoke the citizenship of people they hate, such as Trump.
I say let's stop taking immigrants for twenty years, and once we've fixed our problems, we can do immigration the right way. Take only the best and brightest of those wanting to come, make sure they have a job waiting or have money to bring with them and tell them that they can never use government programs.
That's part of the problem.
Illegals land here, get benefits, and don't have to become full citizens.
I work at a convenience store, and I think the vast majority of the Doordash and Uber Eats drivers are illegal immigrants. A very large portion of them speak close to zero English. They are also extremely stupid and probably have double digit IQs. They are very frustrating to deal with, and they all need to be imprisoned until they can be removed from the country!
OK I'll give you birthright citizenship, but no family reunification. Where I live whole communities are overun with south Asian immigrants, yet they're allowed to sponsor their extended families to live here. They and their children are fine, not grandma, grandpa, mother, father, brother, sister, aunts,uncles......you get it. That's the problem. They are consuming more services than they are paying for.
The relative merits of pro/con have been altered by the extensive actual abuse of birthright citizenship. It's fairly obvious that it's a major draw and so should add weight to the pro side to abolish.
Start with actions other than constitutional amendment. If those fail, then the idea of an amendment could be revisited.
If Trump carries through and issues an executive order to end birthright citizenship, no matter how the courts ultimately decide, -- and we can be sure that's where the ultimate decision would be made -- just the doubt would slow the tide. We won't know how much until that happens.
I have two sons whose future prospects depend on the immigration issue.

With a goddamned vengeance!
