Substack writers: How to disable the unsubscribe notifications
Turn the stupid unsubscribe notifications off and save your sanity!
From time to time on Notes, I see people talking about the notorious “unsubscribe” notifications that tell a writer someone has unsubbed from their Substack. Some writers, especially newbies, take this as a rejection and then waste time worrying that they are losing readers instead of gaining them.
Turn those damn unsubscribe notifications off immediately! It isn’t worth a second of your time, and should have no bearing on your emotional health or what kind of content you write on Substack.
Here’s how to disable the unsubscribed notifications
Go to Dashboard
Go to Settings
Go to Notifications
Toggle the switches to off for the “Cancelled subscription” and “Email disabled” notifications.
Here’s what the menu looks like:
While you are in the notification settings, toggle off any other crap that you don’t need to pay attention to and that might adversely affect your writing or mental health. Don’t let yourself get overwhelmed with unnecessary notifications.
I disabled the unsub notifications ages ago, and I never looked back. I have no idea how many people have unsubscribed from my Substack, nor do I care. I keep on writing, and I keep on getting subscribers. Those who have unsubbed are always welcome to come back if they wish to do so.
I even turned off the notification for when people get free subs to my Substack. I get them every day, usually, but I don’t need to know about them, as seeing them can be distracting. The info is there in the controls, if I care to see it. However, I did keep the notification on for when somebody becomes a paying subscriber. I couldn’t resist that one. 😂
Remember also that - no matter who you are as a writer - your content won’t be for everyone. That doesn’t mean that your writing is bad, or that people don’t like it. It just means that it wasn’t the cup of tea for that particular reader.
Don’t forget also that we live in an age of distraction, and some people simply don’t have the time or focus to get so many newsletters. That’s okay, and it’s understandable. Don’t take it personally when someone unsubscribes.
I hope this article helps you to avoid falling into the trap that has upset other writers. Don’t waste your time or energy worrying about people who unsubscribe from your Substack.
Remember: Keep writing, and your audience will eventually find you (especially if you participate on Notes). 👍🏻
How you can support my writing
Please share this post
Thank you; your support keeps me writing and helps me to pay for rent, electricity, food, car payment and insurance, heat, and other necessities.
All contributions from readers are greatly appreciated. 👍🏻 💀
A coincidence no doubt as I have just unsubscribed from a few writers as I felt guilty in reading their posts while being unable to subscribe or offer any financial support, thinking to myself, the author will be thinking wtf 🤬
So many great writers here and so easy to click that you like and you subscribe but when you then start reading story after story about how bad it is you , as an unpaying reader, feel terrible.
Ha Ha! I hit 799, then it was 796, then it was 798, then it was 796, now it's back at 798, lol.
Still haven't seen an email, even though I turned that feature on recently. I was just curious.
