Substack writers: How to automatically offer a discount subscription price to free subscribers

A setting in the Special Deals menu lets you offer automatic discounts and possibly gain a paid subscriber each time you get a new free subscriber

Good day fellow Substack writers,

I recently discovered something I did not know I could do in the Special Offers menu. It lets you offer every free subscriber the opportunity to become a paid subscriber by giving them a great deal on a monthly or annual subscription.

Here’s how you can do it:

1. Go to Dashboard

2. Go to Settings

3. Click on Payments in the left nav bar

4. Scroll down to Manage Special Offers and click it

5. Create your Special Offer

Check the “Give this offer to anyone who subscribes” box.

Now, when someone becomes a free subscriber, they will see a page like this right after subscribing:

This is a FANTASTIC opportunity to convert a free subscriber to a paid subscriber. All you have to do is set up your special offer and click the checkbox. From that point on, all free subscribers will be offered your deal. It’s about as easy as it gets; no link is required.

Take note of the little flame emojis I put in the name. You can do this easily via your keyboard commands if your computer's operating system supports it. Put whatever emojis you like at the beginning and end of your Name for your offer. It adds a little pizzazz to the page.

I highly recommend taking the time to set this up. It takes very little time, and you give your new free subscriber a chance to get a great deal right off the bat, and it might put a few dollars in your pocket too. So it’s a win-win for everybody!
