Gadsden flag is pretty great, except for the words. Flags should be symbols, and symbols don't require explanation on the flag. It would be like if a skull and crossbones flag said "PIRATE" below it.

Hahaha good point!

Interesting post Morgthorak. How about the Welsh flag - it's hard to beat having a dragon on your flag ! Some old pre-democracy flags were pretty attractive - the French Fleur de lys pre-revolution or the harp on the Irish flag. Also there is claim that first (pre Christian) English flag was a red dragon on a white background. Anyway - now I have to start looking into the East India company as you have piqued my interest there - thank you.

I love dragons, so yeah I'd love to have one on a new design of the flag. I do not like white on flags, so I'd rather they didn't use that for it.

Glad you liked the article, thanks for the kind words.

I love the Gadsen flag but always felt like the Pine Tree flag was the patrician’s choice for revolutionary-era flags. The symbolism of the liberty tree with a John Locke reference checks all the boxes as far as I’m concerned.

To be clear I *like* the gadsen flag best, but that doesn't mean I think it's the most aesthetically pleasing or appropriate for a national flag.

I am partial to the Lone Star Flag of Texas, but I feel it could be better. I think flags should reflect the state. Instead of a Lone Star, I think the Texas flag should have a lone Coyote or Wolf howling at the moon.

Leave the flag the way it is. You have to know that any redesign by a committee in 2024 will be buggered beyond belief.

Expand full comment

Oh come on, Dale. Don't you think "diversity" will add some spice to the flag once the committee starts planning a new design? 😂

Expand full comment

Spice? You know what happens a couple of hours after eating spicy food, right?

I agree. It would be really cool to have some kind of national reading contest or something to see what people come up with. Unfortunately we all know how that would go today.

About 8 years ago the UK had a public contest to name a new polar research vessel. The public chose "Boaty McBoatface". The government refused the name and the ship was named after Sir David Attenborough instead. You can be sure that democracy would prevail here in America and we'd get a flag that looked like something out of a Frederick's of Hollywood catalog. https://www.startpage.com/av/proxy-image?piurl=https%3A%2F%2Fencrypted-tbn0.gstatic.com%2Fimages%3Fq%3Dtbn%3AANd9GcT6IvfUtclpVujJcUJZmGzinRvTUTTJF_e4srH2MdJKMy8QXcwGE9tILQ%26s&sp=1712850895T8371809a1a42f1c0ddbc565cb4b423e15908be1195286a68eeebc686f10fcc28

Speaking as a Brit, the design of our flag is terrible too. Overly complicated and compounded by the fact that it's very easy to fly it upside down (look in detail and you see it's not symmetrical along its horizontal axis). In flags, as with most design, the KISS principle should apply - "Keep It Simple, Stupid". That's why I voted for the Russian flag...oh, and because I love Putler, natch.

Expand full comment

Yes, you have to give it to the Russians. It's simple but attractive, without a lot of crap on it.

I suppose “the flag” and flags in general mean different things to different people. I am very sad about what our country has become(war mongering/ Empire/corporatist) but hope for a rebirth of freedom, belief and care for our country and its people.

The Quebec flag, old Japanese flag & Red Ensign flags are King... oh and the old French Monarchical flag is the greatest in history.

My favorites are the flag of England with St George's cross and Hinomaru (Ball of the Sun). Red on white, simple, visible.

WAY too close to other nations. I’ve always marveled at that fact. I know there’s “reasons” for certain colors, depending on one’s beliefs but, We are NOT like other nations (at least we weren’t) so, why the similar flag?

I’m with you Morg. It’s high-time for a flag that represents the greatness of our Constitution, the heartbeat of the people, and the glory of liberty!

Be careful what you wish for. Minnesota's change was about setting up a one party state and federal government.

Your article on that was heartbreaking. I’ve talked with some ex-pat Minnesotans who didn’t know about it. They were upset to say the least.

We are well on our way to California failed-State status. I was in the city this weekend and apparently armored vehicles are a fairly common sight now. That has not been in the news. Meanwhile not one person I talked to had any idea about the condition of the southern border. That and our legislators are working on making Minnesota a migrant refuge State, because of course....

The next American flags (plural) will arise in a far more... organic fashion. Trying to force it or brainstorm one up results in aesthetically nihilistic abominations like the LGBTQ flag.

I like how you phrased this as, "Do you like the Gadsen Flag or the flags of these dictatorships?" 😄

Ironically, a trashy article. Not because I'm "wrapped up in patriotism" but because it trivialize an important question. What are national flags for? What do they represent? For many on the left, they represent a form of nationalism, something inately abhorrent to them, or Imperialism. In their present neo-Marxist guise, they wrap it up in something it never represented ie racism, and more recently transphobia, hence their preference for the rainbow flag that represents to them inclusion. So we are engaged now in a cultural struggle with each side picking a flag to represent their side in the struggle. For those on the right, the stars and stripes is a reminder, not so much of the nations founding, but of its resilience and steadfastness in the face of foreign aggression, namely the Siege of Fort McHenry at the end of the war of 1812-14, and by extension the Star-Spangled banner, probably one of most moving of the national anthems.

However, if a flag no longer serves its underlying purpose, which is to provide a focus for a united sense of identity, it may well be time to consider a new flag, but that should only happen when the people of a nation as a whole rediscover a real sense of national identity and purpose. We are not there yet. And It can't be imposed. Something has to happen that brings us to the point that we can all see beyond our peesent left-right dilemma and out of that resolution maybe a new flag, a new national anthem, possibly even a new constitution and form of government. U til that time, the belligerent parties will continue to rally around the flag that represents their side in this great national struggle for identity.

What foreign aggression? The empire is the one that has been starting wars and overthrowing governments since WW2. 🙄

The Siege of Fort McHenry was a while before WW2, but that is a minor point.

You gotta watch those Amish, them and their no electricity living. Why wouldn't you want a TV pumping degeneracy into your home? And the Mennonites, they're another sneaky bunch, wearing beards like the Amish... you know who else was big on beards? Osama bin Laden and Castro. Be afraid, be very afraid, I'm telling you we've got a fifth column problem in our midst! That's a catchy phrase you can build a war around, on the other hand I do like the jelly and jam they make. Oh well, sacrifices must be made. mUh DeMoCrAcY is under attack!!!
