Bread and circuses for the 21st century

Expand full comment

So it seems to me too. 👍🏻

The bread is rationed, though.

🤔

And the circuses have increased to make up for the lack…or to distract from it.

This 'ship is as fake as Tom Cruise's series of 5-year contract wives, except Taylor is the Tom Cruise and it's the NFL who are paying for the desperately needed exposure. And I don't think you're theory about the regime is wrong either.

Expand full comment

Yes, I remember Cruise's weird marriages or whatever. One of his wives had to have her family intervene to get her out of the clutches of the scientologists.

Well, first is that we’ve trained ourselves to mind each others business. This has been done for “power couples” literally through out the ages. But with the advent of the teletype and the western press, Hollywood had a field day with America and the world. Also, because the couple have done nothing socially wrong yet haters are saying awful things about them, the tens of millions of fans rush to their defense so the onslaught seems outsized. This too shall pass.

Totally on-the-mark, sir. You make an especially good point about how these two celebrities can use the criticism to further galvanize their fans.

Taylor and Travis, they both represent their "demographic," right? Swift is the idol of American women (especially teenage ones), while Kelce is supposed to be your average football-loving man. But there's definitely some political undertones here. She's literally the only thing that might even remotely save Biden, haha!

Very fun article, thanks for sharing! I might start doing some celebrity articles myself.

Sports are boring, yet sadly despite them being a waste of time they are popular. What I really disdain is how many watch it rather than play it themselves, sports are fun to play I speak as someone who loves skating, loved playing hockey, loves kicking a ball, or throwing basketballs and baseballs and swimming. But watching it is pointless, at least movies engage and convey some measure of philosophy to you, where sports just 'shut your brain off' but if that's all they are for, why do those who fund them want you to 'shut your brain off' as I've heard some defend it.

Expand full comment

True, better to play it than watch it. But millions are lobotomized by staring at a screen of other men playing a game for millions of dollars. Very bizarre if you think about it.

Morgthorak, very very good writing piece and I agree. Pale white redheaded girl here, old lady, actually, and your theories here are very plausible. I am no sports fan, not remotely, but as a woman, the last thing on earth I would want is what should be a private romance broadcasted in fine detail on every corner. No dignity, no humility, no decorum. I would HATE to be famous! Much prefer being an unknown woman of God! Thank you for the depth and intensity of your writing! I am both a deep thinker and an intense person and truly appreciate your efforts here.

It is true, they have no privacy after a certain point. Imagine going to a restaurant and a zillion paparazzi show up and film you eating. A pic of you with food hanging out of your mouth goes around the world in seconds. Who would want that?

Expand full comment

I would absolutely not want that! I think fame goes to people's heads. I love my privacy, even if I labor behind the scenes.

A few things I noticed. I offer no conclusion:

Last fall the New York Times did a feature called “Travis Kelce: The Making of an A-Lister.” He hosted SNL, started moving in some of the same circles, so it’s not as though they met on Tinder (although that would’ve been awesome.)

If it were orchestrated, it seems like it more likely would’ve been a quarterback, not a tight end.

Speaking of quarterbacks,I don’t see Brittany Mahomes in many, if any, cutaway shots anymore.

Instead, you see a lot more T. Swift entourage types in those cut-aways.

Brittany was, however, on the post-game Super Bowl stage while T. Swift was not.

T. Swift was, however, standing with Kelce’s family.

In my 30-plus years in football, I’ve literally never seen anything like when Kelce charged head coach Andy Reid. That should’ve been a huge story. But it wasn’t. That’s surprising.

Look! We have our own Harry and Meghan.

Seems to me it’s a perfect time for a Trump boomerang---was the only reason I watched the stuporbowl. But, alas, my wish wasn’t granted---at least to the degree I imagined. Patience is a tricky commodity. God Bless!!!

Makes perfect sense.

However, I tuned into the Superbowl for the sole purpose of rooting for Taylor Swift to lose.

I’m anti-heroine that way.

I don't know if this is some grand regime plot, but fake romance is par for the course for the entertainment industry. Think Marilyn Monroe and Joe DiMaggio. Think of all the gay leading men who had fake marriages. Or, to go WAY back, think of the first Tarzan movie. Johnny Weismuller was ordered to divorce his wife in order to play Tarzan so he would be "available."

Expand full comment

Very true. Hollywood, the music industry, etc. have always done fake relationships and fake marriages for various reasons. But people back then were a bit more innocent regarding the media; now at least some people know it's bullshit.

Expand full comment

Honestly I'd prefer sodomites have fake marriages with women than fake marriages with men (and their monkey pox riddled "adopted" boys and dogs).

Football and cheer leaders no drama that’s all we want. You can get rid of the half time show as well.

Eh, I just think this is standard celebrity culture. There are plenty of White celebrity couples out there because White men and women are attracted to one another, despite the propaganda, and celebrities live in a closed social loop of decadence so their dating pool is very limited. If the managerial regime wanted to help reduce discontent their energies would be better spent on preventing the supposed president from babbling on camera, yet they don't even seem to care about that. I think even they seem to be affected by the pervasive anomie surrounding the US and its vassals today. I don't want to underestimate what we are up against but I think the would be social engineers are just as degraded and broken down as everything else.

I think they've written Biden off and want to get rid of him, but haven't come up with a viable plan to do so without giving Kamala the presidency, and she would be a nightmare for them worse than Biden.
