Similar complaints were made about firearms by the feudal warrior aristocracies: cowards weapons that were impossible to defend against, with which a peasant could strike down an armoured knight at a distance. Such is the way of projectile weapons technology. What I expect this will mean is a massive democratization of violence, in which essentially anyone can kill anyone from anywhere. There will be political implications, probably in terms of decentralizing power.
Interesting take, and probably right, given how drones are all over the place now. That drone that filmed me at that party was owned by one of the guys there. At least it didn't shoot anything at me, right?
How long until someone uses a drone in a mass shooting? You know that's coming too.
I believe there have already been attempts to assassinate political leaders using drones. Definitely only a matter of time until this technology is used for such purposes.
It's a bit trickier than it sounds, for now. It takes a bit of skill to learn how to use them. Most of the commercial drones have firmware that makes them very difficult to anonymize. Battery life limitations put a hard limit on payload and flight time, meaning that for now they're effectively single-use weapons with a relatively short range. Finally, because they're remotely guided they're subject to electronic warfare interference, meaning that they absolutely can be defended against.
That said, excercises with drones by the Marine Corps have demonstrated that infantry units equipped with loitering munitions gain one hell of a force multiplier, being able to take defended, dug-in positions with a 1:1 rather than 3:1 force ratio. That's remarkable, given that ratio has held at least since WWI.
So, I hate this technology as well. It's a stretch to even have a smart phone and use email for me. Notes is the only social media I have ever used. I only got a smart phone a bit more than a year ago. I used an old nokia until then. I also have a nagging in my brain against writing comments. When they went over from analog tv to digital tv here in 2010, I didn't buy one of the digital boxes and we haven't had tv here since. A cable for the internet brings all of the world's evil right into your home for your kids to have access to. That being said, some fuckers stole the pump out of my well a week or so ago and I still don't have well water for my animals. So, I was able to figure out that they stole it about 12.40 at night from the digital meter on the electric box. And I bet I could geofence gps the area and figure out what phone numbers were there when they stole it if the data broker would sell me the info undoubtedly on those assholes apps. Also, those fucking drones are about to be everywhere, but if I had one I could check my sheep and easily see if a ewe is cast (caught on her back and can't roll over). So is there a point, and what is the point, where you embrace this shit like a motherfucker and turn it around on the people trying to crush you? I constitutionally lean towards avoiding digital shite as much as possible, but the blows I'm taking hurt, metaphorically.
Yep, it's tough to avoid it. It's a marker of how much society has changed, and there's no real going back unless everything blows up and we stop using electricity altogether and go back to a pastoral kind of life.
Then again some nuke EMPs would probably put an end to all of it for a long time. 😂
Yes, my dear old Lich, drones are creepy, but then so are the undead. However, at least the undead once had souls, and even the skeletons and ghouls have normal forms.
As for the cheetahs, they didn't like the looks of the new chew toy.
I'm more worried about the time when the tech-priests try to make servitors out of us or turn us into dreadnoughts.
I know that I'm mixing worlds, but it sort of does feel right, doesn't it?
Well Elon is moving right ahead with that neurolink thing, so it won't be long before it's mandatory to have one plugged into your head. At that point they won't need propaganda, they'll just tap a button and you'll think whatever they want you to think! 🤨
I wasn’t celebrating the suicide scenario at all, but I agreed with the spirit of your post. We really are getting into a bad place with these things, and even worse, if you consider AI, which I did not include in my post.

Good points, check this out. The Russians have created a hibernation feature for drones, so they can be pre-positioned and called to action later:

Yeah, that's an obvious way around the battery life problem.

I've had the same thought about having to give up electricity to get rid of the digital age.
